Il faut cultiver notre jardin - when Voltaire has the protagonist of his unfinished novella “Candide or Optimism”, 1759, say that we must cultivate our gardens, this means in a figurative sense that everyone must do their part to improve society. Gardens are created where people settle. Even in the past, their creation was not only for practical reasons but also for the salvation of souls. They stood for nothing less than a vision of paradise. It has always been the case that the other arts have contributed to the creation of gardens: architecture, sculpture, painting, literature, music, botany and cuisine. One might even say: A garden is the only art form that stimulates all the human senses. For the South Korean-German philosopher Byung-Chul Han, a trip to the garden today can make us marvel again at the beauty and uniqueness of the earth. Experiencing nature can even give people back the reality that is lost in our digital world. In the exhibition “A Journey into the Garden”, contemporary artists show the fascination that this man-made space can exert. However, their artistic works also deal with the dangers to which we humans expose this space and with the visible and, for the time being, invisible consequences of these dangers. The artists exhibiting are: Anne Carnein, Inessa Emmer, Heiner Geisbe, Stefanie Hofer, Rainer Nepita, Maximilian Prüfer, Anja Schindler, Rüdiger Seidt, Oliver Westerbarkey, Itamar Yehiel
